South Sudan’s President Dismisses Finance Minister: Seventh Change Since 2020

According to state-run radio, South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, dismissed the nation’s finance minister, making him the seventh person to hold the post since 2020.

Marial Dongrin Ater, who had been in the position since July 2024, was fired by Kiir without providing an explanation. Late on Thursday, state radio announced that Athian Ding Athian, who held the role from 2020 to 2021, will assume it.

According to the radio, Kiir also dismissed the minister in charge of investmentsWith crude oil export earnings having declined during a civil war that lasted from 2013 to 2018 and more recently owing to disruptions caused by fighting in neighboring Sudan, South Sudan’s economic performance has been hindered in recent years by community violence.

In 2025, the International Monetary Fund predicts that the GDP would decrease by 4.3% and that inflation will reach 65.7%. After South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, Kiir was elected as its first president. Fears of a new conflict were aroused in March when First Vice President Riek Machar was placed under house arrest.

The arrest was brought about by Machar calling his supporters and “agitating them to rebel against the government with aim of disrupting peace so that elections are not held and South Sudan goes back to war,” according to Information Minister Michael Makuei.
