Student Athletes Appointed the First Female Fencer from Saudi Arabia

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s student sports ambassador to the International University Sport Federation is the country’s first female fencer.

Ruba Mohammed Al-Masri’s selection to the position is a testament to the Kingdom’s recent efforts to empower female athletes. The goal of the FISU Student Ambassador program is to assist athletic volunteer programs in the ambassadors’ home countries and foster the growth of collegiate sports.

“I consider this historic achievement for Saudi sports as a turning point,” Al-Masri told Arab News. It makes me feel honoured and proud. This triumph is not merely a personal achievement; rather, it is a testament to the enormous efforts the Kingdom is making to empower young people and promote women’s sports. It is a dream come true and provides opportunities for future talent to see a Saudi girl succeed globally. The ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the United States, Princess Reema bint Bandar, cited Al-Masri’s accomplishment as evidence of the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting women in sports.

“Saudi Arabian women’s fencing has come a long way since Lubna Al-Omair competed in the Rio Olympics in 2016 and up to now with athletes like Ruba,” the woman wrote on X.
