DAMASCUS: In a combined operation with an international coalition led by the United States, Syrian forces detained a top Daesh group official in the Damascus area on Wednesday, according to a security official. According to state news agency SANA, General Ahmad Al-Dalati stated that Taha Al-Zoubi, also known as Abu Omar Tabiya, a Daesh leader in Damascus, was arrested together with a number of his soldiers.
Less than two weeks had passed since an incident in Palmyra, central Syria, on December 13 that claimed the lives of two US soldiers and a US citizen. Washington claimed that the attack was carried out by a lone Daesh shooter.
According to Dalati, “our specialized units carried out a precise security operation targeting a Daesh stronghold in collaboration with the General Intelligence Directorate and International Coalition forces. Five Daesh members were killed in US attacks in retribution for the December 13 incident, according to a Syria monitor on December 20.
According to Syrian authorities, the offender was a member of the security forces who was about to be fired for his “extremist Islamist ideas.” This was the first such event since longstanding tyrant Bashar Assad was overthrown in December of last year.
