Syrian Forces Take Strong Action Against Terror Networks

LONDON: Ali Aziz Sbeira, a well-known terrorist cell commander who attacked civilians, the Syrian army, and internal security checkpoints during the country’s revolt against the former Bashar Assad regime, has been detained by Syrian authorities. Ali Aziz Sbeira is charged of violating the rights of citizens during the post-2011 Syrian uprising.

The capture of Sbeira in the Mediterranean Sea province of Lattakia was declared on Wednesday by the Internal Security Directorate. He is accused by authorities of organizing and arming terrorist organizations. Sbeira, a native of Jableh, is also charged of having ties to Brigadier General Nours Makhlouf and Ghiyath Dalla, two military leaders connected to Assad’s previous regime.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, Sbeira is accused of violating people’ rights during the uprising in Syria after he joined the National Defense Militia in 2011 and assisted in quelling nonviolent protests. He enlisted in the 4th Armoured Division in 2014. Maher Assad, the previous president’s brother, led the division from 2018 until the Assad regime fell in December 2024.
