JEDDAH: A theme park in Taif’s Al-Hada neighborhood has been closed until the collapse of a ride that wounded 23 people is investigated. On Wednesday night, the “360 Big Pendulum” rollercoaster fell apart while it was in motion. Taif Governor Prince Saud bin Nahar bin Saud bin Abdulaziz issued an order for the resort’s immediate closure until an inquiry is conducted, according to a statement that was put on the regional government’s X account.
According to the statement, “a number of injuries occurred; some were treated on the scene, while others were taken to the hospital for treatment.” No deaths were recorded. The attraction, which swings people in a wide arc, had a structural breakdown in its center column, which broke horizontally while in motion, according to social media footage and eyewitness reports. While passengers were fastened to their seats, this resulted in the pendulum’s passenger-bearing arm colliding with the ground.
Park visitors’ footage captures tumultuous scenes immediately following the collapse, with some riders hurt in the initial collision and more harmed when parts of the ride retreated quickly, striking those seated on the other side. Three individuals were in serious condition, and emergency personnel reported a variety of injuries. Security guards, emergency medical services, and civil defense all arrived at the area quickly after the event was reported, demonstrating the promptness of the authorities’ response.
