The EU Calls For "Respect" For The Bosnian Serb Leader's Court Punishment

BRUSSELS: Following the jail sentence of the leader of Bosnia’s Serb area for disobeying an international envoy, the European Union on Thursday encouraged all parties involved to adhere to court decisions and refrain from taking “divisive” acts. A representative for the European Commission stated, “The EU expects all political actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina to respect the decisions of the courts and acknowledge their independence and impartiality without applying any pressure or interference.”

Spokesman Anouar El Anouni told reporters that Brussels calls on all parties to “avoid and renounce provocative, divisive rhetoric and actions, including questioning the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the country.” A 1995 peace deal divided Bosnia into two independent entities: a Serb entity and a Bosniak-Croat federation. These entities are linked by a feeble central government that is overseen by an international high representative.

The pro-Russian leader of the Serb-dominated Republika Srpska (RS), Milorad Dodik, was given a one-year prison sentence on Wednesday for not following the high representative Christian Schmidt’s rulings. The ruling was denounced as “political” by Russia, and Bosnian Serb MPs were considering possible retaliatory actions.
