RIYADH: At the SDG 6 Water Action Agenda Special Event in New York, Saudi Arabia discussed how it has advanced sustainability and water security in an area of severe water shortage. The Saudi Press Agency said on Wednesday that the ceremony took place at the UN headquarters on the fringes of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. It came after Saudi Arabia was acknowledged by UN-Water as one of the nations demonstrating observable and quantifiable advancements in integrated water resources management in line with SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 6.
Saudi Arabia’s strategy for expediting the implementation of SDG 6 was showcased by the Kingdom’s delegation, which was headed by Abdulaziz Al-Shaibani, the deputy minister for water at the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture. The occasion highlighted nations making notable progress and achievements in the field. According to the SPA, Saudi Arabia’s quick advancements in integrated water resources management were cited in the study as a success story.
Al-Shaibani claimed that between 2017 and 2023, the Kingdom’s efforts had resulted in appreciable gains in coordination, efficiency, and service quality. According to SDG indicator 6.5.1, the Kingdom’s integrated water resources management indicator increased from 57 percent to 83 percent over this time, one of the fastest rises in the world, he noted. Al-Shaibani emphasized that major organizational and structural changes to promote sustainable water management had been made possible by the Kingdom’s strong leadership backing.
