ISTANBUL: As thousands of supporters called for justice outside the court, Ekrem Imamoglu, the strong opposition mayor of Istanbul, denounced on Friday what he called “judicial harassment” directed at him. The primary political opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Imamoglu, commented following a statement he made in relation to two investigations that were launched against him earlier this month.
In addition, he is battling a number of other legal battles. After departing Istanbul’s Caglayan court, he stood on the roof of a bus and addressed the masses, saying, “We are experiencing the highest level of judicial harassment in Istanbul.” Imamoglu, who was re-elected as mayor last year and is a member of the main opposition CHP party, promised not to lose up.
He declared, “We will continue to fight against injustice.” He delivered his statement on Friday in relation to two investigations investigating statements he made regarding the chief public prosecutor of Istanbul and a court-appointed expert witness who was involved in lawsuits against local governments that are ruled by the CHP.
He is charged with trying to sway a fair trial by threatening, insulting, and targeting an official. Imamoglu refuted all of the accusations in his statement to the prosecutor, a copy of which AFP was able to view, claiming he was only using his right to free expression.
