DAMASCUS On Saturday, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa reiterated that only the Syrian state has the power and ability to maintain national sovereignty and restore order throughout the whole country, including the unrest-plagued southern province of Suwayda. After a week of fierce fighting between armed Druze factions and Bedouin Arab tribes in Suwayda, Sharaa said in a televised speech that “only the Syrian state can uphold its sovereignty and dignity across its entire territory in the face of current unrest.”
Condemning what he called “blatant Israeli bombings” in southern Syria and Damascus, Sharaa, who earlier in the day proclaimed a full truce, said the raids had only increased tensions and exacerbated instability. He went on to say that the government’s temporary withdrawal of its soldiers from Suwayda had “created chaos” and given rise to unrest. The international community “understands that only the Syrian state can restore stability,” the Syrian president said, revealing that the government has received requests from several countries to step in and regain control of Suwayda.
“We thank Türkiye, the United States, and several Arab nations for their positive stances and support for Syria during this critical phase,” he said, expressing gratitude to a number of nations for their stands throughout this crisis. Speaking to the Druze, who make up the majority in Suwayda, Sharaa underlined their crucial part in the Syrian national identity.
