RIYADH: With an emphasis on sustainable redevelopment, Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb co-chaired the World Economic Forum’s Urban Transformation Summit in San Francisco, California, which took place from October 21–23.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, Al-Khateeb examined the future of the global travel and tourism industry and strategies to improve sustainability and innovation. He emphasised that sustainable development needs to serve as the industry’s cornerstone.

In his keynote address, Al-Khateeb stated that the expansion of tourism was beset by issues like the need to upgrade infrastructure and environmental problems. To solve these issues and support the industry’s future growth, it was crucial to concentrate on sustainability.

He stated: “The tourism industry is expanding significantly, and at the same time, there is a growing demand for experiences that are enriching and sustainable. This presents us with a chance to transform tourism while protecting the environment and encouraging constructive change that benefits societies and their economies in the future.

According to Al-Khateeb, the Future Saudi Cities Programme, a collaborative effort between UN-Habitat and the Saudi Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, has tourism and sustainability as its main pillars.
