LONDON: Fearing that elevating a critic of Israel’s war in Gaza to a high government position would infuriate members of President Donald Trump’s administration, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard decided against doing so. The position of deputy director for mission integration, which would include assembling the president’s daily intelligence briefings, was being considered for Daniel Davis, a senior fellow at the Defense Priorities think tank in Washington.
But after Davis’s suggestion was criticized by a number of her colleagues, Republican members of Congress, and other right-wing organizations and individuals for his position on Israel, Gabbard reexamined the choice, according to an administration source who spoke to the New York Times. In January, Davis called US backing for the conflict in Gaza a “stain on our character as a nation, as a culture, that will not soon go away” on social media.
The Anti-Defamation League declared Wednesday that his appointment would be “very risky.” Former CIA operations officer Marc Polymeropoulos claimed that Davis’s views on the war were at odds with those of the majority of Republicans. Polymeropoulos, a fellow at the Atlantic Council, noted, “His outspoken criticism of Israel and complete opposition to any military action against Iran seems to run counter to current administration policy.”
