Things Could get Better: The First Local Elections in ten Years will be Held for Young Kashmiris

Elections

NEW DELHI: Although Nasir Khuehami and his family have never participated in a mainstream election in Jammu and Kashmir, he is currently running a campaign to encourage others to cast ballots in the first election in ten years. The election will take place in a new political environment after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government removed the region’s autonomy in 2019.

Voting will take place in stages between September 18 and October 1 to elect a local assembly and a truncated government—one that will remove New Delhi’s direct rule and instead have a chief minister serving as the region’s top official and a council of ministers.

The 26-year-old national convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association is touring several valley districts to inspire students ahead of the election.

“Jammu and Kashmir has not held elections in the past ten years.” After the special status was revoked five years ago, even democracy was put on hold, and bureaucrats now rule the area. He stated, “There hasn’t been any accountability.” When we contrast these bureaucrats with our elected officials, we discover that our representatives are responsible, understanding, and willing to listen to us. We now miss this accessibility.
