This Year's Hajj made Advantage of New Environmental Monitoring Tools

Jeddah: To safeguard the environment for this year’s Hajj, Saudi Arabia’s National Centre for Environmental Compliance has started utilising new satellite monitoring technology. The NCEC monitors and evaluates environmental media, such as the condition of the air, water, and soil, using satellite data.

The centre uses satellites to rapidly monitor environmental issues over large geographic regions, allowing emergency personnel to get to impacted areas promptly. The director-general of the Makkah Region branch, Hani Al-Subhi, discussed the centre’s usage of satellite technology with Arab News.

“By enabling a prompt response and improving the provision of a healthy, pollutant-free environment for pilgrims, these technologies help pinpoint the precise locations of environmental challenges,” he added.

Meanwhile, technical monitoring specialist Abu Talib Zaki discussed how the centre collaborates with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology to gather two kinds of satellite images. Measurement of light reflections from other objects is the earliest method of passive remote sensing.

The second is active remote sensing, which generates pictures by using light from the satellite itself. The pictures’ 30 cm spatial resolution, which means that each pixel in the image spans 30 by 30 cm, makes high-precision monitoring of environmental events possible.
