US President Donald Trump on Friday described his latest talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping as “progress,” highlighting discussions on the future of TikTok and broader cooperation, while Beijing offered a more cautious response.
The two leaders spoke by phone for the second time since Trump’s return to the White House, as he seeks to manage tensions with China despite his past criticism of the country. A key topic was TikTok, the hugely popular app that Washington has been pressuring to separate from Chinese ownership.
Trump told reporters that Xi had “approved” a deal regarding TikTok, though he added, We have to get it signed.” China, however, did not confirm that any agreement had been reached. “We’re going to have very, very tight control,” Trump said, while also admitting his personal preference for the platform, noting, “There’s tremendous value in TikTok, and I’m a little prejudiced because I did so well on it.”
The president also said Xi pledged to work with the United States toward ending the war in Ukraine, where China has previously shown indirect support for Russia.
Earlier, in a Truth Social post, Trump said that he and Xi had made progress on multiple “very important issues”, including TikTok. He added that the two leaders would meet in person on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea later this year, and that he planned to travel to China next year.
