Trudeau Anticipates That The US and Canada Will Engage in a Trade War For The "Foreseeable Future"

TORONTO: Following what he described as a “colorful but constructive” call with US President Donald Trump this week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated Thursday that he anticipates a trade war between the US and Canada for the foreseeable future. Both parties are “actively engaged in ongoing conversations in trying to make sure these tariffs don’t overly harm” certain sectors and workers, according to Trudeau, who also stated that the two sides discussed tariffs. Additionally, he reaffirmed that “until the unwarranted American tariffs on Canadian goods are lifted, we will not be reversing our response tariffs.”

Trump imposed tariffs on Washington’s top three trading partners on Tuesday, sparking a new trade war that sent financial markets into a tailspin and prompting rapid response from China, Canada, and Mexico. Trump restricted the fee to 10 percent on Canadian energy, but imposed 25 percent duties, or tariffs, on imports from Mexico and Canada. Trump announced a one-month reprieve for US automakers the day after the new tariffs went into effect.

Following Trump’s Wednesday meetings with executives from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis—the parent company of Chrysler and Jeep—the news was made. According to his press secretary, Trump instructed the CEOs to shift auto manufacturing to the United States in order to circumvent tariffs.
