Trump Claims US Could Control Strait of Hormuz Given More Time

WASHINGTON: As pressure rises on his administration to find a swift end to a confrontation with Iran, President Donald Trump stated on Friday that the US may open the Strait of Hormuz with a little more time.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “With a little more time, we can easily OPEN THE HORMUZ STRAIT, TAKE THE OIL, & MAKE A FORTUNE.” The war in Iran, which began with a joint US-Israeli aerial assault about five weeks ago, is still causing havoc in the region and upsetting financial markets, putting more pressure on Trump to find a swift conclusion.

In response to US-Israeli strikes that started in late February, Iran has essentially closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that transports roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption. With rising energy costs, reopening has become a top priority for governments worldwide.

Trump reiterated his threats against Iran’s civilian power plants in his speech on Wednesday night, but he did not provide a clear schedule for ending hostilities. As a result, Iran vowed retaliation, which lowered share prices.
