Trump Considers Adding 36 more Countries to his Travel Ban

WASHINGTON: A source who has seen the letter said Monday that the United States is thinking of expanding its travel ban to 36 other nations, potentially expanding entrance restrictions to about 1.5 billion people.

Reviving a controversial policy from President Donald Trump’s first term, the State Department stated early this month that it placed a partial ban on travellers from seven additional countries and prohibited admission to nationals of 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti, and Iran.

However, extending the travel ban to three dozen additional countries—including US allies like Egypt and other nations in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific—seems to intensify the president’s immigration crackdown.

According to the Washington Post, which examined the confidential document, Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed it and forwarded it to ambassadors interacting with the nations. The document’s veracity was confirmed to AFP by an individual who has seen it. According to reports, it allows the countries’ governments on the list sixty days to comply with new standards set by the State Department. Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Saint Lucia, South Sudan, Syria, and Vanuatu are among the most populous nations in Africa.
