ANDREWS JOINT BASE, US: On Monday, US President Donald Trump departed for Saudi Arabia as part of what he described as a “historic” Middle East visit combining significant economic agreements with urgent diplomacy on Gaza.
Air Force One departed on a trip that will involve stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, as well as potential discussions about the conflict in Ukraine in Turkey.
The first significant visit of Trump’s second term will be marred by Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza. Still, there is some hope as US-Israeli captive Edan Alexander was turned over to the Red Cross as the president was boarding his aircraft.
Before leaving the White House, Trump declared, “It’s big news.” The good news is that he will be returning home to his folks. They believed him dead. Despite claiming before he took office that he could finish the war in Gaza quickly, Trump has appeared to have cooled his efforts in recent weeks.
In addition, he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been at odds more and more over Gaza, the Houthi attacks in Yemen, and how to deal with Iran’s nuclear program.
Although he emphasised that Iran “can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said that there were “very good things happening” in the negotiations between Washington and Tehran about Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
