RIYADH: US President Donald Trump congratulated Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for arranging the Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Riyadh and commended Saudi Arabia for doing a “great job” hosting the negotiations. Trump expressed his hope that a truce may be reached quickly during his remarks on Wednesday at the Future Investment Initiative Institute Summit opening in Miami, which runs through February 21.
Trump said that if he had been president, the fight, which started this month three years ago, would not have begun. He claimed that Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, “convinced the United States to spend $350 billion to enter a war that was unwinnable, that never had to begin, and that would never have begun if I had been president.”
To begin efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, senior U.S. and Russian officials met Tuesday in Riyadh. Senior Saudi Arabian officials attended the meeting, however there were no representation from Ukraine. According to Trump, Zelensky had the option to join the talks in Riyadh if he so desired.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the two sides mostly agreed to pursue three objectives: rehiring personnel at their respective embassies in Moscow and Washington, assembling a high-level team to assist peace negotiations in Ukraine, and investigating deeper ties and economic collaboration. Trump covered a wide range of topics in his speech, including his foreign policy goals and initiatives to reduce government waste and increase energy output.
