Trump Suggests New Trade Disputes With China

WASHINGTON: At a time when talks between the two sides seemed to be at a standstill, US President Donald Trump signalled increased trade hostilities with China on Friday by claiming that Beijing had “violated” an agreement to de-escalate tariffs. Hours after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared that trade negotiations with China were “a bit stalled” in an interview with broadcaster Fox News, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

Following discussions between top officials in Geneva, the two largest economies in the world decided this month to temporarily reduce the absurdly high tariffs they had placed on one another. The break would run for ninety days. However, Trump did not elaborate when he stated on Friday that “China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US.”

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer criticised Beijing for its continued efforts to “slow down and choke off things like critical minerals” in response to the tweet when he was asked about it on CNBC. He went on to say that Washington was not observing any significant changes in Beijing’s actions and that the trade gap between the US and China “continues to be enormous.” Bessent said on Thursday that Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping may intervene.
