TUNIS: Following a man’s death following a police pursuit, according to his relatives, clashes between police and young people broke out for a second night on Saturday in the central Tunisian city of Kairouan, heightening authorities’ concerns that protests would spread throughout the nation.
Tensions have increased amid protests as Tunisia gets ready to commemorate the January anniversary of the 2011 revolution that led to the Arab Spring movement. A strong UGTT union has called for a statewide strike next month. For weeks, thousands of people have been demonstrating in the southern city of Gabes, calling for the closure of a chemical facility due to environmental concerns.
Police used tear gas to disperse crowds after protesters in Kairouan stopped streets by burning tires and hurled stones, petrol bombs, and flares, according to witnesses. According to the family, the man was chased by police, beaten, and sent to a hospital while riding a motorcycle without a license. He later ran away and passed away on Friday from a brain injury.
Comments from the government were not immediately available. According to the deceased’s relatives, if those responsible are not held accountable, they will not keep quiet and will organize large-scale demonstrations.
