Ukraine War Talks: Trump Pushes for Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting

In his most recent attempt to put a stop to Moscow’s war in Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to get Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy together for a face-to-face summit.

As Zelenskyy and other European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, gathered at the White House on Monday for high-stakes negotiations on resolving the conflict that has raged since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Trump made the proposal.

After speaking with Putin over the phone, Trump claimed to have “begun arrangements” for the summit and that after their two-way discussion, he would meet with his Russian and Ukrainian colleagues in a trilateral setting.

Trump stated on his Truth Social platform, “Once more, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.”

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance are coordinating with Ukraine and Russia.

Separately, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged that Putin had consented to the bilateral meeting, but they did not provide a time or venue.
