UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday appealed for an immediate halt to the fighting in Gaza, Israel and across the wider region urging world leaders to stop actions that force civilians to “pay with their lives and futures.”
Speaking on the second anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups, Guterres repeated his call for the unconditional release of all hostages still held in Gaza. He described the ongoing crisis as “a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale that defies comprehension.
The Oct. 7 assault two years ago, which Guterres labeled a “large-scale terror attack,” claimed the lives of more than 1,250 Israelis and foreign nationals. Over 250 people including women children, and the elderly, were abducted and taken to Gaza. In the subsequent Israeli military offensive, more than 67,000 Palestinians mostly women and children have been killed with hundreds of thousands injured. The UN warns these figures are likely underestimated, as many bodies may remain under the rubble of destroyed buildings. The horror of that dark day will forever be etched in our memories,” Guterres said, recalling his meetings with hostages’ families and survivors, who shared their deep anguish.
