The United Nations has confirmed that 103 civilians in Lebanon have been killed since the ceasefire with Israel was declared in November 2024 urging an immediate stop to the ongoing bloodshed.
In a statement on Wednesday the UN Human Rights Office warned that the ceasefire, now more than 10 months old, has failed to bring lasting peace. UN rights chief Volker Turk said civilians continue to bear the brunt of near-daily Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks.
We are still seeing devastating impacts of jet and drone strikes in residential neighborhoods, and even near UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon,” Turk said. He added that families, unable to rebuild their homes, live under constant fear of renewed violence.
Despite the truce, Israel has justified most of its strikes as targeting Hezbollah operatives and sites. But the damage has gone far beyond military targets. Hundreds of schools health facilities and places of worship remain damaged or unusable leaving communities without vital services.
On September 21, five people including three children were killed when an Israeli drone hit a vehicle and motorcycle in Bint Jbeil, near the border. Turk called for an independent investigation into the attack and similar incidents, saying they raise serious questions about Israel’s respect for international humanitarian law.
