NEW YORK CITY: The release of Edan Alexander, a US-Israeli dual national who was kidnapped during the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, was welcomed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
In an attempt to negotiate a truce with Israel, the terrorist organisation said on Sunday that it would free 21-year-old Alexander. Alexander was thought to be the final American captive still alive in Gaza.
On Monday, Stephane Dujarric, the secretary-general’s spokesperson, stated that Guterres “is profoundly relieved that Mr. Alexander has been freed and is now returning to his family and loved ones after this harrowing ordeal.
The secretary-general reiterates his urgent demand for the unconditional and immediate release of all remaining hostages as well as an immediate and lasting ceasefire. “Humane and dignified treatment of hostages is imperative,” he continued. Alexander’s American parents, who attended the handover in Israel, expressed their gratitude to US President Donald Trump’s government for ensuring their son’s freedom.
On Sunday, Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Middle East envoy, stated that Hamas had consented to Alexander’s release as a courtesy to the president, who is travelling to Saudi Arabia this week. Growing up in New Jersey, Israeli soldier Alexander was kidnapped from his military camp during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on southern Israel.
