UN Security Council Faces Global Pressure to End Gaza Violence

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Tuesday that the world is witnessing “one of the darkest chapters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” nearly two years after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks and Israel’s devastating military response. Speaking at a high-level UN Security Council meeting in New York, he said the violence continues to escalate across the Occupied Territories, threatening regional and global stability.

Guterres described the situation in Gaza City as catastrophic, with famine becoming a grim reality. “The population is constantly forced to move and is being starved,” he said, calling the crisis both “morally and legally indefensible.” He added that the suffering of civilians is only worsening while impunity persists, eroding the credibility of the international community.

The UN chief also expressed alarm over the spread of violence beyond Gaza and the West Bank, including recent tensions in Qatar. He criticized Israel’s September 9 attack on Doha, saying it violated Qatari sovereignty and undermined diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and hostage deal led by Qatar, Egypt, and the US. Warning that the two-state solution is at its most fragile point in decades, Guterres condemned settlement expansion, forced displacement, and annexation.
