The United States has pledged to treat any armed attack on Qatar as a direct threat to Washington, offering the Gulf state formal security guarantees following last month’s Israeli strike on Qatari soil.
According to an Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday, the U.S. will safeguard Qatar’s security and territorial integrity against external aggression. The order stated that in the event of an attack, Washington will employ all lawful means, diplomatic, economic, and if required, military, to defend both American and Qatari interests and restore regional stability. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the announcement, calling the move a significant recognition of the threats the country faces.
The policy shift comes in the wake of Israel’s September 9 strike on Qatar, which targeted Hamas officials engaged in talks over a U.S.-backed peace proposal for the Gaza conflict. Following the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned Qatar’s premier from the White House, offering an apology and assurances that such actions would not be repeated. Netanyahu, in Washington for talks with Trump, had initially remained unyielding over the strikes until the U.S. intervened.
