Following the launching of new antidrug operations in the Caribbean and the raising of a reward for his arrest, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has promised to mobilize over four million paramilitary fighters in response to fresh “threats” from the United States.
In a televised speech on Monday, Maduro declared, “This week, I will activate a special plan with more than 4.5 million militiamen to ensure coverage of the entire national territory – militias that are prepared, activated, and armed.
Former President Hugo Chavez established Venezuela’s militia, which is officially estimated to have five million members, however observers believe the actual number is much lower. There are roughly 30 million people living in the nation.
Maduro condemned Washington’s “extravagant, bizarre, and outlandish threats.” He made these remarks after the administration of US President Donald Trump upped the prize for his arrest to $50 million. It charges him with being the head of the Cartel de los Soles, a network that smuggles cocaine.
New sanctions were recently placed on Maduro’s government and the accused cartel by the United States government, which still does not acknowledge Maduro’s past two election victories. There is no evidence from the US that Maduro is connected to narcotics cartels.
