Venice Film Festival 2025: Spotlight on Cinema and Gaza Activism

Italy’s Venice: With an anti-war protest scheduled for one of the festival’s most important nights, campaigners seek to shift the focus from the Hollywood celebrities gathering on the Lido to Gaza as the Venice Film Festival gets underway this week.

The festival and its parent organization, the Venice Biennale, have been urged by the group Venice4Palestine to sever ties with organizations that back the Israeli government and to revoke invitations to stars Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler. Protesters will conduct a press conference in front of the renowned red carpet on Wednesday, the festival’s opening day. Additionally, protesters want to march in the direction of the festival on Saturday night, which is also the night of Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” global premiere.

The Venice4Palestine letter has hundreds of signatories, including filmmakers Ken Loach and Alice Rohrwacher. Although they sympathize with the Gazan casualties, the Biennale does not boycott artists or make political remarks, festival director Alberto Barbera told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
