What a 10-Day Ceasefire Between Israel and Lebanon Could Mean for Regional Stability

BEIRUT: According to Donald Trump, Israel and Lebanon reached a 10-day ceasefire on Thursday. The US hopes the truce will result in a long-term peace agreement. The ceasefire went into force on Thursday at 2100 GMT, and Trump stated he anticipated direct discussions between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhyahu in the White House within the next “four or five days.”We have a cease-fire with Lebanon and Israel. And that will be fantastic. And they will be getting together,” Trump informed reporters.

The agreement, which hopes to put an end to more than a month of conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed militant organization Hezbollah, was reached two days after Lebanon and Israel held their first direct diplomatic discussions in decades in Washington.According to the State Department’s ceasefire text, the two nations declared they are not at war and would “commit to engaging in good-faith direct negotiations, facilitated by the United States, with the objective of achieving a comprehensive agreement that ensures lasting security, stability, and peace between the two countries.

The Lebanese government will take action to stop Hezbollah and any other non-state armed groups operating on its territory from attacking Israel whenever the truce period is extended by mutual consent.
