What Led US Lawmakers to Demand a Probe Into the Strike on Journalists in Lebanon?

Washington: A number of Democratic legislators demanded on Thursday that the US and Israeli governments thoroughly look into a fatal Israeli military attack on journalists in southern Lebanon in 2023. Reuters videographer Issam Abdallah was murdered in the October 13, 2023 attack, which also injured six other reporters, including two from AFP: photojournalist Christina Assi, who lost her leg, and video journalist Dylan Collins.

Senator Peter Welch, accompanied by Collins, stated at a press conference, “We expect the Israeli government to conduct an investigation that meets international criteria and to hold accountable those who did this.

For the past two years, the legislator from Collins’ home state of Vermont has been demanding answers, first from Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration and now from Donald Trump’s Republican White House. Welch continued, “The Israeli government has stonewalled at every single turn.” We have been incredibly patient with the Israeli government, and we have done everything we reasonably can to obtain answers and accountability,” he stated.

Referring to the Israeli military, Welch stated, “The IDF has made no effort, none, to seriously investigate this incident.” He also stated that the Israeli military has informed his office that its investigation into the incident is closed.
