Why Algeria Remains One of the World’s Largest Wheat Buyers

Why Algeria Remains One of the World’s Largest Wheat Buyers

HAMBURG/PARIS: According to European traders, milling wheat was purchased by Algeria’s official grains agency, OAIC, in an international tender that concluded on Tuesday. According to them, purchases were made for between $259 and $260 per metric ton, including cost and freight (c&f). Trades at $257 were reported earlier, but this was not verified.

Although some early estimates suggested that several hundred thousand tons had been purchased, the exact amount of the transaction in terms of tons was initially unclear. After halting on Tuesday for the end-of-day fasting break during the holy month of Ramadan, tender negotiations are anticipated to resume on Wednesday, according to traders.

Although Algeria’s purchases are optional in origin, traders anticipated that a significant portion would come from the Black Sea region. According to traders, French wheat was once more left out of the tender. Since the middle of 2024, French wheat sales to Algeria have all but stopped due to diplomatic difficulties between Paris and Algiers.

April 16–30, May 1–15, and May 16–31 were the three periods during which the wheat was requested for shipment from major supply locations, including Europe. Shipment is one month earlier if the item is from Australia or South America.
