Why Bayer Agreed to a $7.25 B Roundup Settlement What It Means for Plaintiffs and the Compan

EFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) — On Tuesday, legal representatives for cancer sufferers and agrochemical manufacturer Bayer revealed a proposed $7.25 billion deal to end thousands of lawsuits in the United States that claim the firm neglected to warn people that its well-known weedkiller Roundup could cause cancer.

The potential settlement comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments in April on Bayer’s claim that state-court claims should be dismissed because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved Roundup without a cancer warning. The proposed settlement would not impact that case.

However, the deal would reduce the possibility of a future Supreme Court decision. Even if the Supreme Court decides in favour of Bayer, patients would still be guaranteed their settlement money. If the top court rules against it, Bayer would be shielded from potentially higher costs. The German company Bayer, which acquired the Roundup manufacturer Monsanto in 2018, denies that glyphosate, a major component of Roundup, causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, the business has warned that rising legal fees are jeopardizing its ability to sell the product in agricultural markets in the United States.
