Why Lifting Sanctions on Syria Could Stop a Daesh Comeback

Why Lifting Sanctions on Syria Could Stop a Daesh Comeback

Following the overthrow of the Assad administration a year ago, Syria now faces significant obstacles, including as reconstructing its economy, rescuing citizens and refugees from destitution, and averting a revival of Daesh terrorism.

However, experts in two panel discussions at a conference held on Wednesday at the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C., which Arab News attended, concurred that US President Donald Trump has so far taken all the necessary actions to assist the war-torn country in moving toward stabilization and recovery.

The impact of US measures on Syria’s reconstruction, such as the relaxation of sanctions and initiatives to draw in foreign capital and stabilize the economy, was one of the topics of debate. Charles Lister, a resident fellow at the institute, and former ambassadors Robert Ford and Barbara Leaf participated in the discussion, which was moderated by Kenneth Pollack, the institute’s vice president for policy.

The other conversation centered on Syria’s ongoing economic problems, which could encourage terrorism, including a Daesh comeback. Jay Salkini of the US-Syria Business Council, Celine Kasem of Syria Now, and Mohammed Alaa Ghanem of the Syrian American Council joined moderator Elizabeth Hagedorn of the Washington-based Middle East news website Al-Monitor.
