Washington: For the first time, the Trump administration admitted in court documents that it had let go of almost 25,000 newly hired employees, and that agencies were trying to rehire all of them after a judge determined that their dismissals were probably unlawful. Officials from 18 agencies have claimed in records filed in a federal court in Baltimore, Maryland, late Monday that the reinstated probationary employees were being placed on administrative leave, at least temporarily.
Although the mass terminations were widely publicized as part of President Donald Trump’s larger purge of the federal workforce, the court filings provide the administration’s first comprehensive accounting of the terminations. A few hundred employees were let off, according to the majority of the agencies. According to the documents, the Department of Treasury let off over 7,600 employees, the Department of Agriculture about 5,700, and the Department of Health and Human Services over 3,200.
On March 13, US District Judge James Bredar ruled that the mass terminations of probationary employees, which started last month, were in violation of the rules governing mass layoffs of federal employees. He also ordered their reinstatement while additional legal action was taken. Although some are long-term federal employees, probationary workers usually have less than a year of experience in their current positions.
