BAKU: As world leaders debate the responsibilities of affluent nations to fund climate action in vulnerable regions at this year’s UN Climate Change Conference, COP29, South-South cooperation emerges as a transformative force promoting fair energy transitions.
Saudi Arabia has emerged as a pioneer in this Global South collaboration, harnessing its resources, experience, and strategic alliances to unlock Africa’s renewable energy potential and design a more sustainable future.
The agreements, signed at the Saudi-Arab-African Economic Conference in Riyadh, aim to expand collaboration in oil, gas, and renewables, indicating a comprehensive approach to energy development.
“These partnerships represent our shared commitment to sustainable growth,” Prince Abdulaziz stated during the occasion. “Africa has enormous energy potential, and Saudi Arabia is dedicated to promoting its development for mutual benefit. The five accords are consistent with Africa’s specific energy possibilities. For example, Ethiopia wants to improve its hydroelectric infrastructure, but Rwanda wants to advance innovation in oil demand management and renewable energy integration.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy introduced the Empowering Africa initiative to bridge the energy equity gap on the African continent last year. The project leverages Africa’s untapped solar, wind, and hydropower resources to provide clean and reliable electricity to underserved regions.
