As the Globe Looks For Answers to Drought, Desertification, and Land Degradation, COP16 Will Start in Saudi Arabia

RIYADH — In order to address the urgent issues of land degradation, drought, and desertification, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will hold its largest-ever summit in Riyadh, bringing together world leaders, policymakers, scientists, corporations, and non-governmental organizations.

COP16, which will take place from December 2–13, is expected to stimulate multilateral action and creative solutions for drought resilience and global land restoration. A number of high-profile summits, ministerial discussions, and significant announcements will precede the start of the conference.

The Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Initiative will be launched on December 2 by Saudi Arabia’s UNCCD Presidency with the goal of strengthening international cooperation on drought resilience and establishing a proactive strategy to address global drought issues.

The One Water Summit, which will take place on December 3, will be a major highlight of COP16.
Prominent leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, Kazakhstani President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and World Bank President Ajay Banga will be attending the conference, which is being conducted in collaboration with Saudi Arabia and will center on global water scarcity and governance.

At the same time, from December 2–3, the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Forum will take place in the SGI Pavilion in the Green Zone of COP16, bringing together academics, business executives, and officials.
The forum will examine best practices and future projections while highlighting advancements made under SGI’s environmental and energy tracks.

The Second International Forum on Greening Technologies will bring together customized sessions from December 6–8 to highlight scientific research, creative solutions, and worldwide restoration initiatives.
