RIYADH: Saudi Arabia spearheaded the historic financial commitments of over $12 billion for land restoration and drought resilience projects at COP16.
With the theme “Our Land. Our Future,” COP16, which took place in Riyadh from December 2–13, brought together more than 196 nations and a large number of international organizations. It was a significant milestone in the battle against environmental issues that pose a threat to billions of people globally.
Among the funding commitments made at the event was £10 billion from the Arab Coordination Group to support international initiatives aimed at addressing drought, desertification, and land degradation.
In his opening remarks, Saudi Environment Minister and COP16 President Abdulrahman Al-Fadhley called for greater international cooperation to fight desertification, especially in areas most impacted by climate change.
“The Middle East, one of the areas most affected by these issues, is prepared to take the lead through cooperation and creativity,” Al-Fadhley said.
He underlined that the Kingdom’s green goal is based on Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The Saudi Green Initiative, launched in 2021, has already led to the planting of 95 million trees and the restoration of 111,000 hectares of land.
