The UN Head Gives a Virtual Speech to Kick off the Riyadh Tech Conference

RIYADH: At the 19th edition of the United Nations’ Internet Governance Forum, which took place in Riyadh on Sunday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres gave the opening comments virtually. The Saudi Press Agency said the conference, which takes place from Dec. 15 to 19, is expected to draw more than 10,000 participants from 160 nations. With over 300 presentations and workshops, the forum addresses everything from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity and data privacy.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua and Saudi Communication Minister Abdullah Alswaha were among the other prominent speakers. The forum’s moderator, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, told Arab News: “IGF 2024 came at a very critical time in the global digital world.” “This year is the first year that we dedicate a full track for businesses,” he continued. IGF has a history of being created in several countries with tracks for parliaments, government, and academics, but it was absent for business.

We now understand that technology and the private sector are crucial to the governance of AI and IT. We are inviting a lot of business sector actors to the IGF for the first time, and we hope that this strategy will be carried out at future IGFs. “This year, we expanded IGF Village to provide a lot of exhibitions and active workshops,” Al-Mutairi remarked in reference to the many offers at the forum.

In order to foster community collaboration and interaction, numerous groups are showcasing their work at IGF. Although it is a custom of IGF, this year’s expansion has made it more engaging for all attendees in Riyadh.
