Greek Prime Minister Says Santorini Earthquakes Pose no Threat

Scientists are perplexed by the activity, stating that since records began in 1964, the area has not seen seismic activity of this magnitude. Athens University’s seismology lab said on Friday that since January 26, more than 7,700 tremors have been detected. ATHENS: Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate the tourist island of Santorini due to an unprecedented sequence of earthquakes, but Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed Friday that there was no “immediate danger.”

At a meeting with local leaders on the island, Mitsotakis stated that the state was “fully deployed not because we believe… that something disastrous is going to happen, but because we must be ready for any eventuality.” Since the weekend, hundreds of tremors have struck the nearby Aegean Sea islands of Amorgos, Ios, and Anafi as well as Santorini, which is part of a breathtaking volcanic caldera.

Scientists claim the area has not seen this level of seismic activity since records started in 1964, thus they are perplexed by the activity.
Athens University’s seismology lab reported on Friday that since January 26, more than 7,700 tremors have been detected. Seismologist Costas Papazachos, one of the specialists advising the government on the issue, told the Kathimerini daily on Friday that, according to the most recent data, the activity “will continue for two to three weeks.”
