AMMAN: After Amman denied that the city’s airport and ports had been evacuated due to a threat, Israeli and Jordanian forces intercepted an Iranian missile that was headed for the Jordanian city of Aqaba on Sunday, according to the Israeli military.
An Israeli military spokesperson told AFP that both Israeli and Jordanian forces had intercepted a rocket in response to reports of explosions close to the Israeli city of Eilat. The Israeli military warned of potential “spillover” into Israeli territory just minutes prior to the interception, claiming to have spotted missiles fired from Iran into Aqaba.
Meanwhile, the Jordanian military reported that it had destroyed “three Iranian missiles that targeted the kingdom’s territory” and that a fourth had fallen in an unoccupied area, though it did not say where. Amman, the capital of Jordan, and other regions of the nation also had air raid sirens triggered.
The US embassy claimed that Aqaba’s airport and seaport had been evacuated due to a “credible threat,” but the Jordanian government had earlier refuted allegations that authorities had ordered the evacuation. Mohammad al-Momani, a spokesperson for the Jordanian government, told AFP that no “potential threats” had been found and that “authorities have not issued any decisions to evacuate Aqaba Airport or the seaport, and both are operating normally.
