NEW YORK: Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced “a disturbing rise in anti-Muslim bigotry” globally on Friday, the United Nations’ International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
Guterres voiced worry about the growing violence, isolation, and prejudice Muslims experience around the world, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, in remarks given to the UN General Assembly by his Chief of Staff Courtenay Rattray.
Guterres emphasized that these attacks on Muslims are a part of a larger “scourge” of growing extremism, intolerance, and violence against religious groups and other vulnerable communities, ranging from racial profiling and discriminatory policies that violate human rights to outright violence against individuals and places of worship.
On March 15, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly created the International Day to Combat Islamophobia. Adopted to increase awareness of the rising global problem of Islamophobia, the resolution was proposed by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. In addition to addressing the surge in anti-Muslim sentiment, the day seeks to strengthen international resolve to end violence, exclusion, and discrimination against Muslims.
