Heritage Aspirations are Supported by Jazan's Craft Resurgence

RIYADH: Traditional handicrafts have become less popular in recent years due to contemporary technology. The Artisans House in Jazan is working to preserve them.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, this endeavour to support the region’s cultural heritage also advances the Heritage Commission’s objective of teaching Saudi craftsmen to enhance their abilities and promote the beauty and genuineness of regional crafts.

About 30 craftspeople are participating in a year-long program that reconnects them with local customs through qa’aid manufacturing, taqiyah weaving, and seashell crafts. The SPA said that under the direction of skilled instructors, participants study conventional methods and investigate contemporary design modifications.

The program aims to bring back the art of producing qa’aid, which was initially utilised to make chairs and beds in traditional Jazan households. Trainers promote creative designs appropriate for today’s markets and instruct students in palm frond binding techniques. Traditional knitted headgear is made by taqiyah weaving trainees using white thread.

Seashells are also used by artisans to create sculptures with marine themes, decorations, purses, bracelets, and necklaces. The Artisans House is a hub for cultural education and training while giving local children practical experience in historical crafts.
