The Saudi Presidency's International Year of Camelids 2024 Comes to an End

Rome— Saudi Arabia has wrapped up its leadership of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) 2024 International Year of Camelids. The initiative’s year-long observation came to an end Tuesday with a ceremony at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. Along with top authorities, representatives from member nations, and international organisations, Prince Fahd bin Jalawi, the president of the World Camelids Sport, attended the ceremony. The international gathering was the last in a year that focused on how camelids may improve food security, economic growth, cultural heritage, and climate resilience in over 90 nations.

The project sought to draw attention to the camel’s important economic contribution to the lives of several communities as well as its cultural and social legacy. Saudi Arabia reiterated its determination to use this event to increase camel awareness worldwide and encourage more research and development. In collaboration with a group of Latin American and Caribbean nations headed by Bolivia, the Kingdom presided over the launch of the International Year of Camelids in June 2024.

Assistant Undersecretary for Fisheries and Livestock Wealth at the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture Dr. Ali Alshaikhi emphasised Saudi Arabia’s commitment to promoting camels’ status as an important food source, economic resource, and cultural icon—deserving of more global attention, research, and development—during the ceremony in Rome.
