LONDON: During German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s first official visit to the UK on Thursday, Britain urged Germany to make a concrete commitment to amending its legislation to aid in the destruction of people-smuggling gangs. The two nations also agreed to strengthen military relations. The tour takes place a week after French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Britain, where illegal migrants also topped the political agenda.
Before going to the PM’s Downing Street office for discussions, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Merz signed the first-ever “friendship treaty” between their nations in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. According to Merz, an exchange program for German and British students has been agreed upon by Berlin and London. He stated in German that he thought it was a “good basis for the further development of our relations” to let the “young generation” learn about each other and their different nations.
According to Downing Street, the two leaders were also anticipated to announce an agreement to work together on the production of military products like Typhoon planes and Boxer armored vehicles, which may result in “billions of pounds of additional defense exports.” In the ensuing ten years, they were to pledge to create a precision attack missile with a range of over 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles).
