At least three people were killed after protesters set fire to a council building in Makassar, eastern Indonesia, during nationwide demonstrations sparked by the death of a motorcycle taxi driver struck by a police vehicle. Large protests broke out across several cities, including Jakarta, on Friday after video spread online showing driver Affan Kuniawan being run over by a police tactical vehicle during earlier rallies over low wages and lawmakers’ alleged lavish perks.
In Makassar, unrest turned violent outside both the provincial and city council buildings, which were torched along with several vehicles. Protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails, officials said. Three people died after being trapped inside the burning city council office, secretary Rahmat Mappatoba confirmed. Two of the victims were council staff, while the third was a civil servant. Two died on the spot and one later in hospital. At least four others were injured.
This went beyond our expectations. Usually protesters throw stones or burn tires outside the office. They never storm inside or set the building on fire,” Mappatoba said. The blaze has since been put out, but photos showed the provincial council building engulfed in flames overnight. Protesters also tried to break into the South Sulawesi provincial council building by forcing down its gates.
