Egypt’s Role in the Arab Vision for Gaza Explained

Egypt’s foreign minister Badr Abdelatty outlined a comprehensive Arab and Muslim vision to end the Gaza conflict, urging an immediate ceasefire followed by coordinated efforts for reconstruction and governance. Speaking on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, he stressed that halting Israeli military operations must be the first step to achieve peace.

Abdelatty said Egypt, in partnership with Jordan, is training Palestinians to join a security force for deployment in Gaza, working in full coordination with the Palestinian Authority. He added that the idea of international forces could be considered, provided it is mandated by the UN Security Council and focused solely on supporting Palestinian statehood.

As an interim measure, Arab states are proposing a neutral administrative committee to temporarily manage Gaza alongside the Palestinian Authority before transferring full control. Abdelatty also called for an international conference immediately after a ceasefire to launch an Arab-Islamic plan for Gaza’s recovery, noting that the initiative has already gained support from the EU, Japan, and other global partners.
