Tensions Rise as Israel Dismisses Turkiye’s Warrant for Netanyahu as ‘PR Move

JERUSALEM: Israel on Friday dismissed arrest warrants issued by Turkiye for its top leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling them a “public relations stunt. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the move on X, saying Israel “firmly rejects, with contempt, the latest PR stunt by the tyrant Erdogan.”

Turkiye announced 37 arrest warrants for Israeli officials over alleged “genocide and crimes against humanity” in Gaza, accusing Israel of systematically committing atrocities against Palestinians. Ankara’s Justice Ministry said the warrants reflect accountability for war crimes and cited attacks on civilian areas, including the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital in Gaza, which was struck in March.

Relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv have remained highly strained amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Turkiye last year joined South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Meanwhile, a fragile ceasefire has held in Gaza since October 10, as part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s regional peace framework aimed at easing tensions and facilitating post-war reconstruction efforts.
