US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern on Wednesday that the recent surge of violence by Israeli settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank could spill over and threaten the peace efforts backed by the US in Gaza. Speaking to reporters following a Group of Seven foreign ministers meeting in Canada, Rubio said, “I hope not. We don’t expect it to. We’ll do everything we can to ensure it doesn’t happen.”
The violent incidents in the West Bank have raised alarms as they risk undermining the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, which remains a key focus of international diplomatic efforts. Rubio’s comments come amid rising settler attacks, which Israeli military officials have condemned as destabilizing and counterproductive to security operations in the region.
The G7 discussions addressed global challenges, including the importance of maintaining maritime and energy security while advancing peace initiatives in conflict zones like Gaza and the West Bank. Rubio emphasized the need for coordinated international efforts to protect these fragile peace processes.
