Lebanon Confirms 13 Dead in Israeli Airstrike on Palestinian Refugee Camp

An Israeli airstrike on the Ein el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon in southern Lebanon killed 13 people and wounded several others, making it the deadliest strike in Lebanon since the ceasefire a year ago in the Israel-Hezbollah war. The drone strike targeted a car parked near a mosque in the camp, according to Lebanese state media and the Health Ministry. Hamas fighters prevented journalists from accessing the site as evacuation efforts were underway.

The Israeli military stated that the strike hit a Hamas training compound used to plan attacks against Israel. However, Hamas denied this, saying the target was a sports playground. The war ended in November 2024 with a US-mediated ceasefire, but since then, Israel has continued airstrikes targeting Hezbollah’s efforts to rearm

This airstrike is part of continued Israeli attacks in Lebanon over the past two years against militant groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, following the October 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel and the subsequent Gaza war. The Iran-backed Hezbollah group also fired rockets into Israel in support of Hamas, leading to a conflict in late 2024 that killed thousands and caused massive destruction in Lebanon.
